The Last Observation
To you, writing the last reading,
Welcome to the Storm Post Office. This is research mail from an experimental facility, 1914: a deep indigo cotton envelope with tall, elegant white scientific capitals engraved on it, a pale turquoise plan of a concentric hall and the silhouette of a machine. At the margins runs lavender, hand-inked turbulence, with a numeric calibration strip and one tiny gold dot. Here the reading is the last line, not the last word.
Huxley wrote to a friend: "Sit down before fact as a little child, be prepared to give up every preconceived notion, follow humbly wherever and to whatever abysses nature leads, or you shall learn nothing." — Thomas Henry Huxley, letter to Charles Kingsley (1860)
The last observation is also the beginning of the next. Record what you see as it is, without ornament and without fear. When you want to write, we will receive it.
Reading steadily,
Storm Post Office
