The City and the Stars
To you, walking a new city’s streets,
Welcome to the Storm Post Office. This letter from 1966 comes from Chandigarh: a city that went from drawing to street, its avenues numbered in sectors, great faces of bare concrete cutting their shadows straight and sharp in the sun. The paper is warm cream; the title is clean geometric sans with experimental inline strokes. A teal cut-paper facade, a terracotta sun disk and a small indigo textile tag sit among fine lines of celestial measurement.
In one of his comedies a man says something people never tire of repeating: “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” — Oscar Wilde, Lady Windermere’s Fan (1892)
The streets of a planned city are straight and clean, so looking up is easy. Are you the sort who hurries with eyes down, or one who looks up? No matter. You are here, and our letters take both.
May you look up and find stars
