A Town That Remembers

To you, who remembered a classroom,

Welcome to the Storm Post Office. 1996, a northern mining town, and a sheet of soft cream recycled paper with a tender, looping handwritten English title. A slate-blue halftone like the shadow of a class photograph, no face quite readable; an olive-green school grid underneath; a rust-red coal-train stamp; and a border of pencilled snow around the edge.

In Childhood, Tolstoy wrote: “Happy, happy, irretrievable time of childhood! How can one not love it, not cherish the memories of it?” — Leo Tolstoy, Childhood (1852)

A town, like a person, can keep memories. Which windowsill once held a flowerpot cracked by frost, which blackboard was wiped cleanest, who stood in the back row of the photograph... we remember all of it for you. And if something has come back to you, write it down on this soft paper.

Here, everything is remembered
